CHICAGO (CBS) — A teenager has been charged with shooting a 7-year-old boy who was walking home from school on Wednesday in the Morgan Park neighborhood.

Police have said 7-year-old Elijah Dace was with a group of children walking near 109th and Loomis streets around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, when two suspects – who were hiding on the side of a garage – jumped out and opened fire.

Elijah was shot in the shoulder. Police have said he was not the intended target.

Thursday night, police said a 16-year-old boy had been charged with aggravated battery in connection with the shooting.

Elijah underwent surgery for his wound, and was listed in good condition on Friday.
