(CBS) — A 46-year-old man died after he jumped into a north suburban lake in an attempt to save a cat.
The man was in a canoe on Sunday with two other people and a cat on Loon Lake about 7:45 p.m. when the cat jumped into the water.
The man jumped in after it, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office.
He went under the water and his body wasn’t recovered until 12:01 a.m. Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.
The cat survived.
His name was released pending notification of his family.
The sheriff’s office is investigating along with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
