Man Critically Injured In Ashburn Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police and fire investigators were seeking answers, after a 50-year-old man was critically injured in a suspicious fire in the Ashburn neighborhood early Thursday.

The fire started around 4:30 a.m. at a home in the 3300 block of West Columbus Avenue, police said. Windows at the home shattered from the heat of the fire, and window frames were removed as firefighters tried to smother the flames.

Relatives said 50-year-old Tyrone Lowe was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in critical condition.

When firefighters got the fire under control, they found the family dog, Carson, outside. It was unclear how the 3-year-old Yorkie-Shih Tzu mix escaped, but Lowe's niece said the dog might have played a role in limiting the harm to her uncle.

"I believe that the dog was trying to help my uncle get up, or get conscious, I'm guessing," Heaven Campbell said.

There was some blood found on Carson, and Lowe's family believes it was his. They said they believe the fire started in the kitchen, but firefighters have yet to confirm that.

Arson investigators were at the scene Thursday morning, investigating the cause of the fire, which police said appeared suspicious. Authorities have not specified what was suspicious about the blaze.
