Man Discovers Somebody Living On His Boat In Diversey Harbor

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man who keeps a 42-foot boat at Diversey Harbor says he was shocked after he drove in from Michigan early this morning - and found that somebody had been staying on his boat and had trashed it.

The boat was a mess, says Ramon Beaulieu, the owner of the motorboat.

Beaulieu says somebody had been sleeping on his boat.

"He didn't just sleep on there. He was eating my food. He was drinking. He stole all my booze. He had sex - it looks like - multiple times in my bed. It's disgusting.

"I had to throw out everything. The police took everything as evidence. I just said, 'Keep it.'"

Beaulieu says he's also upset by the response he got when he called 911.

"I had to call 911 three different times because they would not take a report. They said, 'This isn't an emergency.'

"I said, 'It's an emergency. The guy's got my keys. He stole a knife on the boat. I'm out here by myself. It's 4 in the morning. I don't know when this guy's coming back.' "

The city says its policy is to make calls a priority when there's an immediate threat - that is, if the offender is still on the scene.

Beaulieu says the man who trashed his boat had apparently just been released from Cook County jail, and he says when the man left the boat, he was wearing Beaulieu's clothes.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect as 24-year-old Terry Mikkelson of Chicago.

Mikkelson was supposed to be under electronic monitoring for burglary and has been AWOL for a week now.

The sheriff's office says Mikkelson left his jail paperwork on the boat.
