Michelle Obama To Give Commencement Speech To Class That Likely Would Have Included Hadiya Pendleton

(CBS) -- First Lady Michelle Obama will be in Chicago Tuesday to give the commencement address for the graduating class at King College Prep that would have likely included murder victim Hadiya Pendleton, whose funeral Mrs. Obama spoke at.

WBBM's Bernie Tafoya reports at Harsh Park on 44th and Oakenwald, where Hadiya Pendleton was killed two years ago, life goes on much like it did before. On this summer-like day, a kiddie sprinkler sprays water about and residents take walks.

Rhonda Gumbel-Thomas says her block has always been a quiet one except for the Hadiya Pendleton murder, but "Violence in the city appears worse, especially on South Side."

She believes the mayor needs to be working harder to control violence and take more cops off Michigan Avenue protecting the tourists.

Resident Brian Phillips looks at things this way, that, "It's a great block…everybody gets along and you don't see that sort of thing (violence)….but at the same time…we're surrounded by it."
