The nursing field continues to grow in Chicago and the Chicago suburbs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics posted a news release in February 2015 for the Midwest area and stated the health services employment increased by 12,500, a 1.8 percent gain from February 2014 to February 2015.

Chicago is home to many of the top-notch hospitals in the country as well as clinics and private practices. There are many job openings in Chicago for nurses and nurses in specialized fields, according to JobsInChicago.com, and a faster than average growth in nursing will be driven by technological advances in patient care. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states nursing growth will occur for a number of reasons, such as an increase on preventative care, growing rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, and demand for health care services from the baby boomers as they live longer and more active lives.

Nurses are able to receive a registered nurse (RN) certification through a two-year degree program at a local community college, but the chances to gain employment are greatly increased when a bachelor's degree in nursing is obtained. Many nurses are also selecting to become certified nurse specialists (CNSs), those candidates add a master's degree to their resume as they want to become more valuable in their field and be a top pick for those nursing positions that are highly competitive. Those CNSs who want to get into the research field will most likely need a doctoral degree.

For those interested and compassionate about helping others, the nursing field is a career that can be very rewarding and will continue to grow for years. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states the job outlook for nurses is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than average for all occupations. The job outlook for nurses in Chicago is definitely positive and it is a career that is very gratifying.
