Meningitis Fears Intensify As Pride Fest Gets Underway

(CBS) – Health officials are sounding the alarm over a meningitis outbreak that may be worse than previously thought.

Since the beginning of this month, there have been six confirmed cases of meningitis among men having close contact with other men; one man has died.

CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports a potential seventh case is being investigated.

One huge concern are so-called "hook-up" apps that men use to meet other men. With Pride Fest weekend upon us, city health officials say there is an easy solution.

Still, free vaccines are being offered.

"It's a fantastic, safe and highly effective vaccine," Chicago Health Commissioner Julie Morita said Friday.

The current outbreak involves a dangerous bacterial infection known as invasive meningococcal disease. While it has so far affected mostly African Americans, all men who have sex with men are urged to get vaccinated.

"The sooner the better that you get inoculated, the safer our city will be for everyone," says Ald. Tom Tunney, whose ward includes the Boystown district.

The disease spreads through close contact: having sex, kissing, or even sharing drinks or cigarettes. The incubation period can be 5 to 10 days.

"People develop a fever, a headache, a stiff neck muscle aches or body aches and sometimes in the later stages a skin rash," Morita said.

Gilberto Soberanis didn't waste any time getting his vaccination. "I think it's the right thing to do," he said.

There are a lot of places offering this vaccine free right now.
