One Dead, One Wounded In Chatham Shooting

CHICAGO (STMW) -- One man was killed and another was wounded in a Chatham neighborhood shooting Thursday night on the South Side, police said.

Two men, ages 20 and 23, were inside a basement apartment about 9:55 p.m. in the 7900 block of South State Street, when someone knocked on the door and asked for the 20-year-old man, police said.

When the door was opened, the person fired several shots, before running away northbound, police said.

The 23-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not confirm the fatality early Friday.

The 20-year-old was shot in the leg and shoulder and suffered a graze wound to the head, police said. He was also taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

A police source said the younger man is a documented gang member.
