Truck In I-55 Smash-Up Belongs To Tenn. Company With Previous Violations
(CBS) -- The truck that crashed through a construction zone and into 10 cars on Interstate 55 early Friday belonged to Purdy Brothers Trucking, headquartered in Tennessee.
The company has 146 vehicles and 113 drivers, one of whom may have been driving with fatigue, according to one of the 10 car owners hit by the truck.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has given Purdy Trucking a satisfactory safety rating based on the last two years of 218 inspections. Violations were found in 72 of them.
The rating is also based on its crash history: 17 in the last two years, with six involving injuries. There were no fatalities and no detail about the accidents.
Federal regulations say truckers can only be on the road for so many hours without a break and the federal safety report on Purdy says the company has gotten 11 so-called "hours of service" violations. They include two for driving over the allowed amount and others for filing a false report or not keeping logs.
CBS 2 reached out to the owner of Purdy Trucking but did not get a response.
Illinois State Police have not identified the truck driver, saying they are still trying to figure out what he will be charged with.
