Animal Hospital Program Offers Kids Hands-On Experience In Pet Care

(CBS) -- A Chicago animal hospital is looking for children who'd like to learn more about pet care, reports WBBM's Regine Schlesinger.

It's called the Junior Vet Academy, offered by Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center near Belmont, Clybourn and Western on the North Side. Dr. Aaron Jackson says the program is geared towards children between 6 and 12 years old and will offer a hands-on look at what a veterinarian does.

He says each child will choose a stuffed animal as his or her "patient."

"Showing them labs. We'll be showing them surgery. They'll be able to interact with the microscopes, patient examination, X-rays. We have a bandaging lab set up for them so they can actually bandage their own patient," Dr. Jackson said.

The kids will also learn about pet safety. You can sign up for either this Sunday or August 2. It costs $60 to register, with that money going to the Anti-Cruelty Society.
