Flash Flood Watch Canceled As Rain Tapers Off
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The National Weather Service has canceled a flash flood watch for the Chicago area, as heavy rains have stopped early Thursday.
"The threat of very heavy rainfall and flash flooding has diminished," the weather service said in a statement around 4 a.m.
A flash flood watch had been issued for all of northern Illinois on Wednesday, and originally was supposed to continue through 1 p.m. Thursday, as a large storm system brought more heavy rains to the area.
While a large storm system continued to inundate central Illinois Thursday morning, heavy rains have passed in northern Illinois.
The rains Wednesday night and early Thursday came as communities in the far western and far southwestern suburbs were cleaning up from Monday's severe storms, which spawned nine tornadoes in Northern Illinois.
While the threat of heavy rains has passed for northern Illinois, parts of the Iroquois, Kankakee, and Illinois rivers already were past flood stage due to all the recent rain.
Minor to moderate flooding will continue on portions of the Iroquois, Kankakee, and Illinois rivers," the weather service said.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms were possible later Thursday, but chances for rain should diminish in the afternoon.
Friday could see another slight chance of rain in the afternoon, but Saturday should by clear, as should most of Sunday. The weather service said there's a chance of thunderstorms late Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.
