Hot And Muggy Afternoon Ahead Of Stormy Evening

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It will be a hot and humid start to the week, but a storm front will cool things down significantly Monday night, and temperatures should stay mild the rest of the week.

Temperatures should hit a high of about 90 in the afternoon on Monday, which would be only the second time this year Chicago has reached that mark. Heat index values will be in the mid to upper 90s.

It should be dry most of the day, but storms in Iowa and Minnesota were heading toward Chicago, and should arrive in the area around sunset, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service, as the storms move south and east from Iowa and Wisconsin, they could bring some heavy rainfall, with a marginal risk of severe weather for most of the Chicago area.

The chance of storms should drop off for most of the area after midnight, though some scattered showers could be a factor through about noon Tuesday.

As that front moves through, temperatures will drop significantly, falling to the mid 60s by Tuesday morning.

Temperatures will hold in the 60s and 70s Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, before returning to the low 80s on Friday afternoon, with highs in the mid to upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday.
