Tropical Heat On Tap For The Weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) -- If you've been longing for the dog days of summer, you'll get your wish this weekend, as conditions will be hot and muggy through Sunday, as temperatures will soar much higher than we've seen in weeks.

The official temperature in Chicago has only reached 90 degrees once this year, but it might hit that mark on both Friday and Saturday, after three straight days of temperatures in the mid 70s.

The high was expected to be about 90 degrees on Friday, with a heat index of 100 to 105, thanks to high humidity levels, as dew points were already in the 70s early Friday morning across the Chicago area, making for tropical conditions.

Saturday will be an even hotter, with a high of about 93, and a heat index of up to 110, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature hasn't reached 90 in Chicago in more than a month, when the mercury hit 92 at O'Hare Airport on June 10.

Sunday will be slightly cooler, so to speak, with a high of about 88.

There's a chance of rain each day this weekend, but most of the daytime hours should be dry.

Scattered showers were possible Friday afternoon, mostly to the south of the city, with a thunderstorm possible Friday night.

There's also a 20 percent chance of showers on Saturday, and a 50 percent chance on Sunday. Some of Sunday's storms could be strong, before a dry and milder start to next week, with highs in the low 80s Monday and Tuesday.
