Cubs Designate Clayton Richard For Assignment, Call Up Yoervis Medina

(CBS) Prior to Wednesday's doubleheader in Cincinnati, the Cubs designated left-hander Clayton Richard for assignment and called up right-handed reliever Yoervis Medina from Triple-A Iowa.

Medina, 26, appeared in three games for Chicago in June, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three. He had a 2.68 ERA in 66 appearances for Seattle in 2014. The Cubs acquired him in a trade with the Mariners in May, sending away catcher Welington Castillo.

Medina is 0-2 with a 8.68 ERA in 18 2/3 innings at Triple-A this season.

Richard was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings in three appearances, two starts, with the Cubs this season.

The Cubs also made official the call-up of right-hander Dallas Beeler from Triple-A Iowa, and he'll start the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader. He'll serve as the team's 26th player that's allowed for doubleheaders.

Beeler allowed two runs on four hits in five innings earlier this season in a start against the Cardinals. He's 2-5 with a 6.02 ERA at Triple-A this season.
