White Sox Trade 3B Conor Gillaspie To Angels For Cash

(CBS) The White Sox traded third baseman Conor Gillaspie to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday for cash considerations, they announced.

The 28-year-old Gillaspie is hitting .237 with three homers, 15 RBIs and a .640 OPS in 58 games this season. He'd been designated for assignment by the White Sox last Sunday.

Gillaspie should have a chance to play in Los Angeles in the short term after Angels third baseman David Freese fractured his right index finger, an injury that will keep him out at least two weeks.

Gillaspie has been one of many disappointing White Sox players, as he has a WAR of 0.0 this season. His designation for assignment came shortly after the emergence of rookie third baseman Tyler Saladino, who's hitting .282 with a .762 OPS in 10 games and has provided a spark.

Gillaspie was in his third season with the White Sox. He was solid in 2014, hitting .282 with a .752 OPS, but he's lacked pop while playing a premium power position. He had seven homers and 57 RBIs in 130 games last season.
