Cuteness Overload: Sloth Born At Lincoln Park Zoo

CHICAGO (AP) -- A Hoffman's two-toed sloth born at the Lincoln Park Zoo is the first offspring of a breeding pair.

The zoo said Thursday the sloth was born July 25 to 21-year-old mother Hersey and 32-year-old father Carlos.

It says the sex and measurements of the newborn haven't been determined because the baby is clinging tight to Hersey.

Curator Diane Mulkerin says the infant appears healthy and has passing critical milestones such as nursing regularly and clinging well to its mother.

Hoffman's two-toed sloths have large hooked claws that help the nocturnal species hang from treetops in the canopies of tropical rainforests in Central and South America.

The zoo says the family is on exhibit at the Regenstein Small Mammal-Reptile House and is most active later in the day.
