Wheeling Condos Get Temporary Fix After 5 Days Without Water
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Running water has been restored for a north suburban condo complex that had been without it for five days, but the fix is only temporary, and there is still a boil order in effect.
The Plum Creek Condominiums in Wheeling get their water from two wells owned by the association. One of those wells malfunctioned several months ago, and the other broke down on Friday.
Although repairs were made to a failed pump shaft on Tuesday, and water has begun flowing again, there is a boil order in effect at least until Thursday, while the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency takes samples to make sure its drinkable.
The village and property manager, Cornerstone Management, said the condo's Board of Directors was previously warned the wells needed to be fixed, or something like this would happen.
Village officials said the fix is only temporary. Residents who own the wells, and had been using portable toilets in the parking lot, and getting drinking water from a tank in the garage, must decide whether to connect to the village's water main, or have the wells completely rebuilt.
