CHICAGO (CBS) — A series of garage break-ins and gang-related shootings have residents in Rogers Park on edge.

Two of the break-ins happened in the 6600 and 6700 block of North Maplewood Avenue and a third in the 6600 block of North Artesian.

As a result, police have issued a community alert, warning residents. They say the break-ins have been happening overnight and in the early morning hours.

There’s also been an increase in gang-related activity in the community.

On Wednesday, a man was shot at Ashland and Morse. Police say the victim is an alleged gang member who was on parole for a felony. Police led a man away in handcuffs from the scene.

Robert Conlon is the Director of Youth Development Services at Howard Area Community Center. The shooting happened steps away from his facility.

“We’re dedicated to their safety, the youth come here to learn, to work on their arts projects and it’s sad this violence has to overshadow all the great work that they’re doing,” Conlon said.

49th Ward Ald. Joe Moore released a statement: “This latest shooting is the result of an ongoing dispute between two gang factions. When members of the two factions happen to encounter one another on the street, violence sometimes erupts.”

Police are monitoring social media as the rival gangs have a tendency to trade threats and insults online.

Police also say they are questioning a person of interest in Wednesday’s shooting.
