Chicago Ridge Woman Hoping Son Can Receive Culinary Degree Before He Dies From Cancer

(CBS) -- A Chicago Ridge woman is trying to help grant her 21-year-old son's wish before his life is claimed by a rare form of cancer.

It was about a year ago when doctors found cancer had invaded one of Eric Lorenz's kidneys. They did radiation therapy.

His mother Jackie says Eric continued his culinary classes at Moraine Valley Community College.

"He worked really hard. He passed all his classes. He worked at the same time. He worked almost full-time."

Then last month, cancer was back.

Jackie says with just two weeks to go before getting his diploma, Eric was too sick to complete the work.

"My son wants his diploma. We're hoping... so that he can have it before... so that he can have it and understand it."

A spokesman for Moraine Valley Community College says the college is "looking into" the family's request.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the family.
