Man In South Suburbs Dies After Contracting West Nile Virus

(CBS) -- A south suburban man in hers early 90s has died after contracting West Nile Virus, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health.

The man was hospitalized on Aug. 23 after becoming ill the day before and died on Aug. 27.

"Sadly, this case reminds us that West Nile virus can cause serious illness, and although rare, at times can lead to death," said Cook County Department of Public Health COO Dr. Terry Mason in a press release. "It is important that we all keep our guard up this time of year and follow basic prevention tips."

Health officials say testing has found pools of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus in 57 communities. Many people who become infected with West Nile Virus never become ill and have no symptoms. Authorities recommend wearing insect repellent, getting rid of any standing water on your property and repairing or replacing torn screens on doors and windows.
