Suburban Food Pantry Volunteer To Hear Pope Francis Address Congress Thursday

(CBS) -- A Schaumburg food pantry volunteer will be among those at the Capitol Thursday when Pope Francis addresses Congress.

77-year old LaVerne Horgan volunteers at the Church of the Holy Spirit food pantry in Schaumburg. She'll be the guest of Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth.

The pope speaks often of the poor and those on the margins of society and Horgan calls that "marvelous."

"I think there's a lot of people out there that really need help…that is not accessible to them and it's not because they're not trying," she said.

She says she's in a state of disbelief over having the opportunity to see the pope, "because, whoever thought I'd be in the presence of the pope…and such a great man, such a caring and compassionate man?"

Horgan says no one in the House gallery will be allowed to bring anything in with them, including purses and cameras. She says, though, that she'll never forget what she sees and hears tomorrow.

Horgan says the Church of the Holy Spirit Food Pantry serves 375-400 families each month. It's open on Thursdays between 2-5 p.m. Families are limited to one visit per month.
