Bears' Will Montgomery Suffers Broken Fibula

By Chris Emma--

CHICAGO (CBS) -- In earning their first win Sunday, the Bears suffered a big loss. Center Will Montgomery suffered a broken fibula during the first quarter of a 22-20 victory against the Raiders at Soldier Field.

Bears coach John Fox revealed this news following the game, offering the little details available.

"As far as time frames, I don't know yet," Fox said.

With rookie center Hroniss Grasu a healthy inactive Sunday, starting left guard Matt Slauson moved over to center, with Patrick Omameh stepping in at left guard.

Slauson had a few snaps that were off, one of which led to a fumble. However, he filled in Montgomery's role and brought stability to the offensive line.

"That's not what you want to see," Slauson said of Montgomery's injury. "I don't want to see it. Will was my guy, he's great, a great, great player for us. He's definitely what sets the whole offense. I knew I was in that position. Definitely not as comfortable with it, but the guys battled."

A seven-year veteran guard, Slauson said he had taken six snaps at center this season. However, he was prepared in case of an emergency, with the Bears keeping Grasu off to juggle offensive line roster flexibility for game day.

"That's part of being a pro," he said. "I've got to do what I'm asked. In that type of scenario, I have to do it, and I can't have any reservations about it. I can't overthink, I just have to go."
