Beverly Bars Divided On Approach To Cubs' Playoff Run

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's not exactly "bar wars," but two Southwest Side bars have taken very different approaches to the Cubs playing in the postseason.

On 113th and Western, McNally's is renowned as an anti-Cubs bar. One side of its marquee reads: "Go Sox & Whoever Plays The Cubs." Even after the Cubs eliminated the Cardinals from the playoffs, the other side still reads "Cardinals fans welcome."

During the National League Division Series, McNally's at first promoted free rounds of beer every time the Cardinals hit a home run. When it was pointed out the beer freebies would be illegal, McNally's decided to offer 50-cent beers for every Cardinal homer.

On 103rd and Western, meanwhile, the marquee for Sean's Rhino Bar & Grill says: "Sox And Cubs Fans Back Your City. Let's Go Chicago."

Sox fan Chris Holz said he likes the sign calling for Chicago baseball unity.

"That's great. I'm a Sox fan, but I'm cheering for the Cubs, too," he said.

Sox fan Jean Bennett agreed and also said she's backing the Cubs in the playoffs.

"I think most people back the Cubs," she said. "They would back any winning team in Chicago. Even Sox fans."

Carl Blattner couldn't go quite so far.

"I'm a true South Sider," he said. "I'm a Sox fan. So, I mean, if the Cubs win, they win. I'm not going to cheer for them to lose, but if I miss a game, it's not going to break my heart."

Holz is also a Sox fan and, after looking at the sign outside Sean's Rhino Bar, said he's not so sure he likes it. He says he's for the Sox and whoever plays the Cubs.

Cubs fan Nick Neehan likes the approach at Sean's.

"I'm all for it," he said. "They're all Chicago teams. You should back 'em."
