Man Critically Injured In Portage Park House Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was critically injured after being trapped in a burning house early Tuesday in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The fire was reported about 1:35 a.m. at a single-family home in the 5100 block of West Grace Street, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire on the first floor near the rear of the house, Chicago Fire Dept. District Chief Juan Reyes told reporters at the scene.

A 71-year-old man who was trapped in the building was taken to Community First Medical Center in critical condition, according to police and Fire Media Affairs.

Firefighters also rescued two dogs from the house, and the dogs were taken to an animal hospital, Reyes said.

There were no working smoke detectors in the building, according to Fire Media Affairs. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
