Woman Found Dead During Apartment Fire In Whiting, Ind.

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A woman died in an apartment fire early Tuesday in northwest Indiana.

Firefighters responded to a three-unit apartment building in the 1700 block of 119th Street in Whiting, Ind., about 3 a.m., Whiting Fire Chief Gus Danielides said.

Crews found smoke coming from a unit in the northwest corner of the second floor, Danielides said. The fire was extinguished within about 10 minutes.

The woman who lived in the apartment, identified as 61-year-old Sheryl Denise Anderson, was found right outside the rear door leading to the fire escape, according to Danielides and the Lake County coroner's office.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner's office. She suffered burns, but her manner of death is pending.

No one else was hurt in the blaze, Danielides said. The other two residents of the building were able to get out the front door.

Danielides said the cause of the fire is not yet known and the state Fire Marshal is investigating, but there did not appear to be any foul play.
