Police Charity To Ask Joe Gliniewicz Family For Money Back

CHICAGO (CBS) -- When Fox Lake Lt. Joe Gliniewicz died on Sept. 1, a charitable organization that comes to the aid of families of police officers gave his widow $15,000.

Now, the 100 Club is going to ask for the money back, after an investigation found Gliniewicz was stealing money from a police youth training program, before he killed himself.

Joe Ahern, the organization's CEO, says he has an obligation to use the money wisely for officers killed in the line of duty.

The 100 Club has given out $10 million over the past 49 years. The civilian organization provides for the families of first responders who have lost their lives in the line-of-duty.

This is the first time they've asked for money back.

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Commander George Filenko said Gliniewicz was being investigated for stealing money from the Fox Lake Police Explorer training program.

He said the amount of money taken was "thousands of dollars" for personal use over the past seven years.

Ahern emphasized that the Gliniewicz case shouldn't harm the good reputation of the more then 13,000 police officers in the Chicago area.
