4 Killed, 16 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Four people were killed — including a 14-year-old boy — and at least 16 other people have been wounded in Chicago shootings since Friday evening.
The latest homicide happened late Saturday in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.
Michael A. Johnson, 43, was found with a gunshot wound to the head about 10:45 p.m. sitting in the driver's seat of a parked vehicle in the 700 block of West 59th Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Johnson, of the 2900 block of West 79th Street, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead 11:22 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.
About an hour earlier, a 14-year-old boy was shot to death in the Gage Park neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
J-Quantae Riles, 14, was walking home from the store with a group of friends in the 2200 block of West 59th Street about 9:30 p.m. when shots rang out, according to Chicago Police and anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes, who spoke with the boy's mother Sunday.
The teen was found dead on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the back, authorities said. Holmes said it's unclear if the shooting was a drive-by. The teen's friends ran off when they heard the shots.
J-Quantae's mother had recently moved the teen and his seven-year-old sister back to Chicago from Virginia, Holmes said. She is six months pregnant with twins.
"She thinks it's her fault because he got shot, but I explained to her it's not her fault," Holmes said. "She's totally upset. She's totally traumatized."
Early Saturday, a man was shot to death in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.
The 56-year-old was found lying on a sidewalk in the 1100 block of North Pulaski shortly before 3 a.m., police said.
He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead. The medical examiner's office was still withholding his name Saturday night pending notification of his family.
The weekend's first fatal shooting happened about seven hours earlier in the same neighborhood.
Felix McGhee Jr., 51, and two other men, ages 19 and 27, were outside in the 1400 block of North Kildare about 8 p.m. Friday when two gunmen walked up, started shooting and then ran away, according to police and the medical examiner's office.
McGhee, who lived on the same block, was shot in the abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he later died, authorities said.
The 19-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai with gunshot wounds to the abdomen, arm and buttocks. The 27-year-old was shot in the leg and arm and taken to Stroger, police said. Both were listed in critical condition.
The most recent non-fatal attack happened Sunday evening in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.
At 6:24 p.m., a 26-year-old woman was outside in the 10700 block of South Indiana Avenue when someone walked up from the alley and shot her. The shooter then ran westbound, police said. The woman was shot in the abdomen, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where her condition was stabilized.
About six hours earlier, a man and a boy were shot by someone with a BB gun on the Far South Side. The 2-year-old boy and 24-year-old man were in the 11600 block of South Lowe when someone in a passing vehicle shot at them with a BB gun, police said. They walked into Roseland Hospital at 12:30 p.m., police said. Both suffered puncture wounds to an arm and were listed in good condition.
About 6:55 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The man, 48, was shot in the back in the 1100 block of South Francisco, police said. He was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
At least 10 other people have been wounded in separate shootings since 5:30 p.m. Friday.
