Harvey Sex Offenders Registered To Fake Addresses

(CBS) -- Sex offenders may not be where they say they are, but it's up to police to check things out.

What we found in the city of Harvey is - some things aren't quite right. CBS 2's Audrina Bigos takes a look in this original report.

Anthony Watkins is registered at 14717 Seeley Avenue in Harvey, but his aunt Vickie Watkins says he does not live there.

"Can't nobody find this address," she said.

But after searching and ruling out this open lot where it appeared to be., we found it.

So did Harvey Police. The aunt says that was seven months ago. She told them her nephew was out of town. She says no officer has come back to check.

"It's something to look into," said neighbor Rosie Begay. "Especially with everything going on."

"Something is going on and it's not all good," said Melvin Caldwell with Harvey Public Schools District 152. "There seems to be a high incidence of these situations"

Caldwell says to protect students, the district wants police to be on top of the registry.

We stopped by the Harvey Police Department to ask about the registry, since no one returned our phone calls or emails.

Harvey police told Bigos they will call back tomorrow.

We checked with the person who oversees the state's sex offender registry. She says Harvey Police officers are required to verify the addresses given to them by sex offenders.
