At Waterman Farm, Customers Come Face To Face With Their Thanksgiving Dinner

(CBS) -- For thousands of Chicago-area families, finding a bird for Thanksgiving is a little more involved than pulling one from bin at their local supermarket.

Owner Robert Kauffman expects to sell 35,000 fresh turkeys by Thanksgiving and another 5,000 on top of that by Christmas. At HoKa Turkey Farm in Waterman, that is how his family has made a living since 1933.

Making the trek 60 miles west is now an annual tradition for those whose feathers aren't ruffled by looking their food in the face.

"They've had a good life -- they are treated well here," customer Diane Billing, who drove 90 minutes to get her turkey, says. "I'm hungry. So, I want to eat."

"I try not to think about it but I also know that's just how it works," says another loyal customer, Angela Laho, of nearby Big Rock.

"Turkeys come from live turkeys," Aaron Laho says.
