The Bernstein Brief: Warriors Needn't Care About 72 Wins

By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) They don't give awards for regular-season wins.

Wait -- they do, in the NHL. It's called the Presidents' Trophy, and it goes to the team with the best record heading into the Stanley Cup playoffs that determine who wins the prize that actually matters to anyone. People make fun of the Presidents' Trophy, in fact, noting the low correlation (8 of 29) between winning it and then a championship.

I hope the Golden State Warriors are smart enough to budget their human resources for something that means far more than topping the win total of the 1995-'96 Bulls -- who went 72-10 -- even if their sparkling 13-0 start to the season solidifies them as a reasonable candidate to win 73.

If they do, they do. That's how I'd be thinking about it from within, looking at that record not as a goal, but as a possible exciting byproduct of being the best team in the league. Parades are for other things.
