Volunteering Another Way To Give Back On Giving Tuesday

(CBS) -- Today is Giving Tuesday but what if you don't have the money to donate this holiday? There's another way to give back.

Giving Tuesday was born four years ago to encourage people to open their wallets for their favorite cause but Jenne Myers, CEO of Chicago Cares, says giving back doesn't have to be about money.

"Giving Tuesday is a global movement that sparks the aftermath of shopping," Myers said. "It's not just about buying things for other people, it's also about giving back to those in need, people who don't know. There are so many options. Chicagocares.org is our website and we have 200 volunteer opportunities a month. You can choose something there."

Myers says you can't put a price tag on your time.

"You can go serve food at a food shelter, you can go read with students at a local school, you can go visit seniors by playing bingo or having breakfast with him, all great opportunities for folks to really get involved in the community and give back their time which is the most precious commodity," Myers said.

Myers says volunteerism does pick up around the holidays but designating a specific day to "give back" reminds people it's needed year round.

The Giving Tuesday movement now has 40,000 partners worldwide and raised more than $86 million.
