Mothers Against Senseless Killings Recruiting New Members In Hyde Park, Kenwood

(CBS) -- A group of mothers who claimed some credit for reducing violence over the summer in the Englewood neighborhood is recruiting more volunteers today in the Hyde Park neighborhood, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Mothers Against Senseless Killings or MASK was formed last spring following the murder of a 34-year-old woman on the 7500 block of South Stewart. Members fed up with the violence took to the streets patrolling, setting up lawn chairs to be a presence and talking to young people and there was a reduction in violence.

Now they are looking to add to their numbers with an expansion into the Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods. They are meeting Saturday at Bixler Park at 5621 S. Kenwood Ave. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. hoping to recruit more members for what is also called the "Army of Moms."
