Portage Woman Killed In Borman Expressway Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Portage woman was killed in a crash Wednesday night on the Borman Expressway in northwest Indiana.

Rebecca Navarro, 56, was driving a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser east in the right lane of I-80/94 just west of Burr Street when her vehicle collided with the back of a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu at 10:08 p.m., according to Indiana State Police.

The Malibu, driven by a 27-year-old Hobart man, was also driving in the right lane, traveling slower than the 55 mph speed limit with his emergency hazard lights on because of a flat tire, police said. A semi truck in front of Navarro's car swerved to avoid the Malibu and the Cruiser subsequently crashed into the Malibu.

Navarro, of the 800 block of Camelot Manner in Portage, was taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital in Gary, where she was pronounced dead at 1:27 a.m. Thursday, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

The man driving the Malibu, his 7-month-old daughter and pregnant 21-year-old wife all suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and were taken to Methodist Northlake Hospital, police said. They were all wearing their seat belts and the child was in a child-restraint seat.

Police said Navarro was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash and alcohol was believed to have played a role.

The exit from the expressway to Burr Street was closed for about an hour while authorities investigated.
