Three Killed, At Least Seven Wounded In Shootings Across Chicago

(STMW) -- Three men were killed and at least seven people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Thursday afternoon.

A man was shot to death on Christmas Day in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired at 11:36 a.m. Friday in the 700 block of West 71st Street found the 20-year-old with multiple gunshot wounds to the thigh, according to Chicago Police. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

About three hours earlier, a man was found shot to death in the West Side Austin neighborhood, police said.

The 22-year-old was discovered unresponsive about 8:30 a.m. on the stairwell of a back porch in the 5500 block of West Monroe, police said. He was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm either fatality Friday afternoon.

The weekend's first homicide happened about 4:50 p.m. Thursday in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side.

A witness told police that 30-year-old Craig Harris went outside and four males were waiting for him in a gangway in the 7300 block of South Vernon, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

Police said the witness heard gunshots then ran inside to call police. Harris, who lived on the same block as the shooting, was shot in the temple and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred about 12:40 p.m. Christmas Day in Austin.

A 23-year-old man was shot in the arm and abdomen while he was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 5800 block of West Wabansia, police said. He drove to the 1300 block of North Mason, where he flagged someone down and that person then called 911. The man was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where his condition was stabilized.

About 3:40 a.m. Friday, a 22-year-old man was shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. He was riding a bicycle in the 1600 block of West 44th Street, when a white van pulled alongside him and the driver shot him several times, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

About 90 minutes earlier, two men were wounded — one gravely — in another Back of the Yards neighborhood shooting. The two, ages 40 and 20, were sitting in a vehicle in the 4700 block of South Loomis about 2:10 a.m. when another vehicle pulled alongside and someone shot them, police said. The older man was shot in the head and listed in grave condition at Stroger Hospital, police said. The other man suffered a graze wound to the back and refused medical treatment at the scene.

At least three other people have been wounded in separate shootings since 12:15 p.m. Thursday.
