Two Fatally Shot By Chicago Police In Response To Domestic Disturbance On West Side

(CBS) -- The families of two people shot and killed by police Saturday morning as they responded to a domestic incident say police over-reacted, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Police were called to an apartment building on the 4700 block of West Erie at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday for a domestic incident.

In a statement, police said that the officers were confronted by a combative subject and the officers fired their weapons, fatally shooting two people. A 19-year-old man and a woman in her 50s who lives in the same building were killed.

Janet Cooksey the 19-year-old's mother says her son, Quintonio LeGrier, a college student, was shot seven times and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

Cooksey says she thought her son would be taken to a hospital for mental issues after police say he became combative with his father, threatening him with a baseball bat. Instead, the college student home on break was shot to death.

"If you are a police officer, you are supposed to be trained for situations," she said. "Seven bullets were put in my son. Seven."

The woman who was fatally shot is identified as Bettie Jones, a mother of five. Her daughter says she was shot opening the door.

Chicago Police have offered little explanation, referring questions to the Independent Police Review Authority, which is investigating.

A gofundme page has been set up to pay for Bettie Jones' funeral.
