The Bernstein Brief: If Bears Need An OC Soon, Look West

By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) It's ugly for Mike McCoy in San Diego, with rumors already swirling that Sean Payton has designs on the job. Speculation is that ownership would want a big name and a big splash upon a potential move to Los Angeles, and the revenue uptick from relocation would allow them to pay for one.

Regardless, McCoy's Chargers are 4-11, and nobody thinks they'll do anything but fire him.

With all due respect to Bears quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains, McCoy would be the stronger pick as the next offensive coordinator for Chicago if Adam Gase leaves for a top position elsewhere.

McCoy has a long history under John Fox, climbing the ladder in Carolina from offensive assistant in 2002 to quarterbacks coach to passing game coordinator in 2008. He joined up with Fox again in 2011 as the Broncos' offensive coordinator before taking the Chargers' head job in 2013. Gase served under McCoy in 2011 and 2012 as Denver's quarterbacks coach.

It just works -- the DNA of the offense can remain and in the capable hands of a veteran play-caller.

This one's easy for Fox and the Bears, just the latest possible example of fortuitous timing for them in the coaching market.
