Zion Elementary Schools On Lockdown After Shots Fired

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Several Zion schools remain on soft lockdown Wednesday morning after shots were fired in the northern suburb.

Shots were fired in the 2000 block of Ezekiel Avenue in Zion about 8 a.m., Lake County sheriff's Det. Chris Covelli said. He could not immediately confirm if anyone was injured in the shooting.

Covelli could not say whether the shots were fired by officers or suspects.

One person was taken into custody. Covelli said there's no indication that anyone else was involved, but nearby schools remain on lockdown as a precaution.

Zion police requested the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force to investigate, Covelli said. Evidence technicians remain at the scene as of 10:30 a.m.

"Due to police activity in the area all schools within Zion Elementary District 6 have been placed on soft lockdown per the request of the Zion Police Department," according to a statement posted on the district's website.

"Our buildings will remain secured until further notice from the Zion Police Department."
