Future Of Chicago State University A Topic Of Conversation At PUSH Excel Scholarship Breakfast

(CBS) -- On this day honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the topic at the PUSH Excel scholarship breakfast was the future of schools that serve many African Americans, like Chicago State University.

The budget standoff in Illinois has left public universities without a flow of state money, and Chicago State University says it will run out of money in March.

Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush is holding Republican Governor Bruce Rauner responsible.

"I think the governor is so misguided on so many different things," Rush said.

Several Chicago State University students were at the PUSH breakfast that focused on scholarship, like 19-year-old sophomore Andre Fredricks. He says he doesn't know what's going to happen with the rest of his education if Chicago State has to shut down.

"It's surreal, to be perfectly honest with you," Fredricks said.

Governor Rauner was at the PUSH breakfast, but he left without talking with reporters.

His office said in a statement: "The governor is concerned about the financial health of all the state's universities. The best way to help higher education in Illinois is for Democrats to enact a balanced budget, but they still have not done so."
