HAMMOND, Ind. (CBS) — A convenience store clerk was shot and killed during a robbery on Wednesday morning.

At 4:39 a.m., a male suspect entered a 7-11 store, 6031 Hohman Ave. in Hammond, and while robbing the store, he shot a 60-year-old store clerk.

The clerk, who is identified as Roger Unton from Blue Island but, was taken to St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect apparently fled on foot and is still at large, police said.

CBS 2’s Roseanne Tellez reports the clerk was well-known and well-liked by customers.

“Nobody deserves to be killed,” said Loretta Mitchell Young. “Not for money, not for anything. They just took an innocent life for no reason.”

“He was a real quiet man, kept to himself,” said Irene Estrada. “He was a gentleman.
