Mayor Emanuel's Text Messages From After Fatal Police Shooting Released

(CBS) -- For the first time since he's been mayor, Rahm Emanuel is releasing text messages in response to our Freedom of Information request. They cover the day after Christmas when a Chicago teen and mother of five were shot and killed by a Chicago Police officer and several days after that.

He texts the Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante at 8:20 a.m. "good morning. Any updates I should know about?"

"Yes sir. Fatal police involved shooting. Can you take a call or call me?" Escalante replied.

The mayor was in Cuba on a family vacation.

In the same thread of texts he instructed Escalante to "Check out minister. Can be helpful."

That same day, a little more than an hour later, the mayor asked an aide: "media acting breathlessly?"

Later texts discussed when the mayor would return from Cuba.
