Rainforest Café, Morton's, Other Chicago Restaurants Affected By Data Breach

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The owners of some popular restaurants in the Chicago area have notified customers to monitor their credit and debit card accounts, after a data breach affecting more than 500 restaurants nationwide.

Landry's Inc., based in Houston, owns Rainforest Café, Bubba Gump Shrimp, Morton's, McCormick & Schmick's, and several other restaurant chains across the country.

Beginning in March 2014, and ending last December, hackers breached the company's credit card system, stealing account numbers on magnetic strip cards, and using the information to make large purchases at Best Buy, Target, and other retailers.

The massive security breach affected 11 restaurants in the Chicago area:

• Bubba Gump Shrimp, Chicago , from May 8, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• Claim Jumper, Lombard, from May 5, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• Mastro's Steakhouse, Chicago, from May 5, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• McCormick & Schmick's, 41 E. Chestnut St., Chicago, from May 9, 2014 to Dec. 3, 2015
• McCormick & Schmick's, 1 E. Upper Wacker Dr., Chicago, from May 9, 2014 to March 14, 2015; and from May 8, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• McCormick & Schmick's, Oak Brook, from May 9, 2014 to March 14, 2015; and from May 8, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• Morton's, 65 E. Wacker Pl, from May 10, 2014 to March 14, 2015; and from May 8, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• Morton's, 1050 N. State St., from May 10, 2014 to March 14, 2015; from May 8, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• Morton's, Schaumburg, from May 5, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• Rainforest Café, Chicago, from May 8, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015
• Rainforest Café, Schaumburg, from May 8, 2015 to Dec. 3, 2015

Landry's also owned Capis Italian Kitchen, a restaurant at Navy Pier, which closed in November 2014. Because the restaurant closed before the company's investigation began, Landry's was not able to determine if it was affected by the data breach.

The company urged customers to closely monitor their credit and debit card statements. If you think there was an unauthorized purchase, you should contact your bank.

Landry's set up a toll-free number for customers with questions about the breach: 877-238-2151.
