16-Year-Old Boy Shot And Killed On Way To School In Austin

CHICAGO (CBS) -- He was walking to school, just as he does every day, except Wednesday, Martell Anderson never made it.

The high school basketball and football player was shot to death in the Austin neighborhood. His mother spoke with CBS 2's Jeremy Ross.

There are signs surrounding a signpost of a cold-blooded act and a chilling loss.

"My heart, I actually didn't feel it beat no more," said Dorice Anderson. "I went completely numb."

Anderson said her son was on his way to school Wednesday morning but learned 16-year-old Martell Anderson would never make it there.

"My son was shot in the face," Anderson said. "I was lost."

The mother of nine says around 8 a.m. her 16 year old planned to attend Orr Academy, where the high school junior played basketball and football.

Investigators say two men approached Anderson in the area of North Lavergne and West Ferdinand one with a gun, both without warning.

Anderson said it had to be a case of mistaken identity.

Friends sign the sign marking the area where gun violence took place.

As for who pulled the trigger here then ran off, Anderson says they need to turn themselves in.

While the family believes their son was wrongfully targeted police aren't sure what prompted the killing.

They add no one is in custody, but they are actively looking and investigating.
