(CBS) — The cold weather may take a toll on your Valentine flowers, if you’re not careful about protecting them in these frigid temperatures, reports WBBM’s Nancy Harty.

If you are going to leave your sweetie red roses or other flowers in the car while running errands, outdoor floriculturist Tim Pollak with the Chicago Botanic Garden says protect them.

“Make sure that it’s covered,” he said. “Fresh flowers, they usually offer a plastic sleeve but make sure that it completely covers the top of the flowers and the plant or put it into a bag.”

If you do that and make sure that the car is warmed up, they should be good for about an hour-and-a-half, Pollak predicts.

He says flower delivery companies go to great lengths to keep their product protected in case they have to sit out on a door step, including putting hand-warming packets inside the packaging.
