Illinois Seniors Challenge Potential Cuts In Home Care

Budget Blowback

(CBS) -- Seniors, unionized workers and a local lawmaker say they are fighting Governor Rauner's proposed cuts to a senior home care program.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports.

Residents who rallied at the Collins Senior Apartments on South Blue Island said if the governor's planned cuts to the Community Care program go through, it will be devastating for them. That's because they need help with everyday activities.

Steve Autry Bey says his respiratory problems make home care a matter of life or death for him.

Home care worker Pam Walton says those cuts will hurt not only the seniors. She says the workers would be jobless without the program.

State Sen. Patricia Van Pelt says Democrats are willing to compromise with the governor, but not about this. She says lawmakers will not agree to any plan that cuts out seniors.

Rauner insists he wants more resources for those in need, but there must be a budget, and so far there's no agreement.
