Early Voting Begins Monday For Illinois Primary

(CBS) -- In campaign 2016, the handling of the shooting death of Laquan McDonald by Chicago Police is a big issue in one of the races in the primary election next month.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross has a preview of the race for Cook County state's attorney as early voting begins citywide Monday.

That race could give early voting a boost. In the last election Cook County reported more than 36,000 early ballots cast. In Cook County, any voter may use an early voting site regardless of where that voter lives.

You're not required to bring a government-issued photo ID, but it's helpful to have one. That's in the event there is a question about a voter's registration, address or signature.

Voters also can cast ballots by mail in Illinois. Since 2010, Illinois voters have not needed an excuse to vote absentee.

Kim Foxx, Donna More and current State's Attorney Anita Alvarez are the Democratic candidates running for Cook County state's attorney.

This race has attracted attention because of the Laquan McDonald case.

The challengers attacked the time it took Alvarez to prosecute that deadly police shooting. Alvarez called them too inexperienced to hold the position.

There are 51 sites you can vote early in the city and there are more than 40 locations in suburban Cook County. To look up early voting locations in Illinois, click here.

Early voting runs from Monday, Feb. 29, through March 14. The primary election is March 15.
