And neither was champion wrestler Sammy Brooks’ mullet.
Sports fans learned this during a hilarious interview after Brooks won the Big Ten wrestling title over the weekend. Fans also discovered that key to making a champion isn’t hard work and dedication.
It’s a good haircut.
“These fans just respond really well to a good haircut, so that’s what I was working on coming in here, making sure I had it fluffed and feathered the right way,” Brooks told the Big Ten Network. “I think the fans saw my hard work.”READ MORE: Jubilant Fans, Booming Businesses Near Wintrust Arena As Chicago Sky Win WNBA Championship
The interviewer then tried to get Brooks to talk about his consistency and trust in himself.
Like a seasoned politician, Brooks wasn’t thrown off message and stuck to his talking points.
“I gain trust every time my hair grows a little more, and a little more I trust in myself and my mullet, so it’s a process, you know,”a completely straight-faced Brooks said. “You can’t grow a great mullet in a day. You can’t win a Big Ten title in a day.”
Brooks, who grew up in west suburban Oak Park, wrestles in the 184-pound division for perennial wrestling powerhouse, the University of Iowa.MORE NEWS: Jewelry Merchants Robbed Outside Hotel In Naperville
