Chicago Students Take Civics Lesson To The Polling Place

(CBS) -- Dozens of Chicago high school students hit a major milestone Thursday by casting their first vote.

CBS 2's Sandra Torres reports.

A drum line accompanied students from Phillips Academy, to help celebrate the important decision they were about to make.

The 17- and 18-year-olds have been taking a civic engagement class to learn more about the election process.

"I didn't take anything seriously, but as I started to pay attention I thought maybe I do need to vote," senior Taleya Beck says.

It was the ninth march for the group Chicago Votes. They have two more to go to wrap up this election cycle and will organize even more as the general election approaches.
