Danny Trevathan, Bobby Massie Bring Tough Demeanors To Bears

By Chris Emma--

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) -- Seated before the media Thursday at Halas Hall, it was abundantly clear why Danny Trevathan and Bobby Massie were there.

One could reference Trevathan's 109 tackles as a linebacker for the Super Bowl champion Broncos in 2015 or the steady presence of Massie on the Cardinals' offensive line and know they both make the Bears a better team in 2016, but another trait stood out too: a swagger.

"I pack some punch," Trevathan said. "I don't care how big you are, I don't care how strong you are. It's just me and you. I hate losing."

Said Massie: "I'm here to move people."

Similar to linebacker Pernell McPhee's declaration that he's "violent" in meeting with the media last March, the Bears' newcomers made quite the first impression.

General manager Ryan Pace's quest to find difference-making players for his Bears roster brought in Trevathan, the 25-year-old who was so key in the Broncos' championship glory, and Massie, the 26-year-old monstrous right tackle who joins right guard Kyle Long to provide what should be stout protection on one side of the line.

On Thursday, the Bears brought their two newest players to Halas Hall for their introductions to Lake Forest and their new organization.

Trevathan's the prize of this still-developing free-agent class, signed to a good value at $24.5 million over four years. He was one of eight linebackers who recorded more than 100 tackles and added two interceptions last season.

The Bears landed a top target in Trevathan, massively upgrading a position of great need. His fit is natural, with former Broncos coach John Fox, the man who gave him a chance as a sixth-round pick in 2012, now leading the charge in Chicago.

In just four seasons, Trevathan went from Fox's project to one of the NFL's top linebackers.

"I stay humble and hungry," Trevathan said. "In the world today, it's easy to get big-headed and overlook everybody."

Pace's signing of Massie was key in that it gives the Bears a greater sense of continuity on their offensive line. Massie was brought in to play right tackle, with Long being moved back to his more comfortable home of right guard.

In Arizona, Massie was the reliable right tackle who helped pave the way for the Cardinals the amass the most offensive yards in the NFL in 2015. He and Long are close friends from working out at the offseason facility of LeCharles Bentley, with Long serving as a recruiter for him to the Bears.

"The opportunity to come in and play with a dominant guard in the league who's a good friend of mine, that played a big part of it," Massie said.

Last season, Trevathan was part of a Super Bowl champion in Denver while Massie worked with a team that reached the NFC championship. Both hope for the same kind of success in Chicago.

That's why they're both now members of the Bears.

"Winning is contagious," Massie said. "Once you start winning, you don't want to lose. We need a taste."
