Berwyn Man Stalked Riverside Teacher For 14 Years: Police

HEADLINE

(CBS) -- A 36-year-old Berwyn man is being held on $750,000 bond, accused of stalking a west suburban teacher for 14 years.

The teacher's life changed in 2002 when, police say, he testified against a man who was trespassing on school grounds.

Since then, that teacher has allegedly been stalked and harassed by the man, Cyrus Chamanara, of Berwyn.

"You're talking about an individual that made it his mission to make that victim's life a misery," Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel tells WBBM.

Chamanara's most recent crime was allegedly damaging the teacher's car on school grounds: ripping the windshield wipers out of the sockets.

"It's unusual because you have an individual here that actually was stalking somebody for over 14 years. And he did research on the internet. He would follow our victim in his car," Weitzel says.

Chamanara was arrested after police saw surveillance video of the school parking lot, the police chief says.

He says Chamanara has had other victims over the years, including former NBA player Jeff Hornacek, who is a native of the western suburbs.

Weitzel says Chamanara was upset with Hornacek for not allowing him to be part of a basketball clinic for teenagers. At the time, Chamanara was an adult.
