Man Pulled From Lake Michigan Near Rainbow Beach

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was in critical condition Thursday morning, after he was pulled out of Lake Michigan just before sunrise.

Just after 6 a.m., police and fire crews responded to the water treatment plant near Rainbow Beach, at 79th Street and the lakefront for a person in the water.

Chicago Police Marine Unit and Fire Department dive teams pulled a man out of the lake alive.

The Fire Department said the man was wearing a life jacket, suggesting he had been on a boat that might have gotten into trouble, but that's not clear, as no boat was visible nearby.

Paramedics worked on the man for about 20 minutes at the scene before he was transported to South Shore Hospital in critical condition.

The lake was calm at the time, but the water temperature was about 44 degrees, so it wouldn't take long for hypothermia to set in.
